BOOK REVIEW # 1
The Complete Guide to Being Evil by Laura Stephenson
The Complete Guide to
Being Evil is the debut novel
from author Laura Stephenson. This story follows Kalara a sassy,
snarky, well-bred, beautiful young mage. After an unfortunate run-in
at a high-end party, with a local well-to-do necromancer by the name
of Whitcomb, Kalara seeks the aid of a devil to dispense of her newly
acquired nemesis. Cue Evander, a young deviling, in need of a big
deal with a mortal to redeem himself from failing his final
assignment to become a full blown devil.
I
found this story to be very fun, witty, and fast-paced. The
characters were well-rounded and growth was noted in each of them.
The author was even kind enough to provide us some hilarious guide
notes, which were a particular favorite touch of mine!
I
did, however, have a few issues with this story, though none of them
so big as to deter anyone from reading this wonderful story or to
lessen the star rating received. The first, there is the use of
latin, and without actually knowing latin myself, a short translation
would have been much appreciated. There was also a section where the
name of the imp kept changing, and I kept getting confused and was
unsure what the author was trying to say by this. Finally, there is
the parallel story of the rat that really took me out of the story at
times, I didn't feel like it really had a good tie-in, or reason to
be a part of this particular novel.
Overall,
The Complete Guide to Being Evil is
a fun, fast-paced fantasy novel, with heart (lots of 'em!).
I will definitely be
recommending this to anyone in need of a smile, and a good weekend,
snuggle up with a cup of hot coffee (or tea), read.
